Brand new boots, straight out of the box. Pulled out packing paper from inside the boots. Unzipped the sides. Slide my foot in. As I’m pulling laces back through and begin to pull tight, the metal (ish) cleat on the side completely broke away from the insert through the leather of the boot. I’m sure that a company like Merrill would have designed their boots better then to break in not even a full use, but unfortunately I can’t afford the return process due to needing to have work boots and will be stuck fixing this myself. Be warned before spending the amount of money these cost.

Firstly, I bought a used pair, they arrived in perfect order except for one missing eyelet which I received a refund for. Besides that, they seemed to be never worn.
In my few weeks of use I noticed a few quality control issues. The leatherwork around the zippers is uneven (pictures 3 &4), which does not effect functionality but could be emblematic of further qc issues. The glue adhesion on the sole of the right boot has also come loose, but that is an easy fix. For the price I would generally not expect these problems.
Fit and comfort are great, I work 8-12 hours a day, mostly standing and walking and these have been great. The waterproofing is adequate as of yet, holding up to light Oregon rain. I wear them commuting on my motorcycle, which I can attest is a good measure of durability. The zipper is clean and does not stick, the laces are adequate.
Overall they are comfortable, but the few issues in the early weeks of my ownership was unexpected. I’ve owned merrils in the past, and they have a good reputation for a reason.

19Oct23 Initial Impressions – Day 1
I bought these because I’m 18mo into my first pair of Moab 3 shoes and like them very much. The Moab 3 boots don’t fit my foot quite the same. The boot insole doesn’t seem to have quite the same arch support, and the toe-box is noticeably narrower (I wear a wide). The boot wasn’t uncomfortable by an means, but that was a little disappointing.
I didn’t have any issues with the eyelets breaking when cinching down the laces, and this is my first pair of side-zip boots but I thought the zipper was fine (it’s a YKK, so I doubt it will give trouble).
I often have issues with the Achilles/heel area in boots, but these don’t cause any issues for me.
I didn’t have a chance to see how good the waterproofing is.
I docked a star because of the insole/toe box and because Amazon switched the boot color from green to black when it sat in my cart overnight, and didn’t give any sort of notification when I decided to hit buy the next morning.

VERY comfortable boots! Hopefully they last longer than the previous version.
