Now, as I’m writing this, it’s incredibly cold down here in Dixie, and frankly, everything from about Albuquerque to the Atlantic in is the deep freeze.  By the time you read this, things will likely be back to normal here, but I’ve got something to say:

Damn it’s cold!

No wonder some of ya’ll get so angry when the snow comes and the mercury drops.  Honestly?  We don’t do that here.  The temps rarely go below freezing, and lows in the teens are a once-every-two-years kind of thing.

With that said, this cold snap DID make me appreciate the things I don’t have – a heated garage, insulated pipes (the neighbor down the road had a frozen pipe blow out in the ceiling, and what a mess…), and “heavy” clothes.  I’ll tell you, I’ve only rarely been in a situation when a pair of Walls “Blizzard Prufs” couldn’t turn the cold, but splitting up some kindling today sure made me realize how good we’ve got it down here.

All this is to say that it’s been a few days since I had any desire to sit on the bike, and I found this out:  If I’m not thinking about riding, tinkering with the bikes in the garage, or riding, I can get an awful lot done.

This week, I’ve split enough kindling to handle the fireplace for the rest of the year, I’ve organized my toolboxes, my workbench is as clean as it’s been in two decades, and the “Round Tuit” list from She Who Must Be Obeyed has all been done.

Additionally?

I’ve rearranged the linen closet, changed out countless bulbs (under the premise of “upgrading” to LEDs), organized the attic a bit, and rebuilt two carbs and cleaned every firearm I own.

I am bored out of my damn mind…

Aside from getting some honest victories this week, I’ll be honest, I’m really pleased to not have spent any money online on gear yet.  The Boss lady got me a couple gift cards and jokingly said they’re to support my bike habits, but even with all the “busy-ness” and after Christmas sales, I haven’t spent a dime.

Now, though, I’ve got a question for you all:  what do you do when it’s like this for months?  Seriously!  I remember my Dad telling me about when he was at Great Lakes a lifetime ago and how “everything was simply still” on those coldest mornings, and how he’d sit there drinking black coffee and dreading another day in the cold and always thought he was a little overdramatic.

Not now.  I guess the bigger thing is the simpler one:  In less than a week, I’ve come to realize just how blessed I am to live where I live and to have the freedoms I have.  I think a lot of us forget about that, in our haste to keep up with the Jones’ or to emulate those we see on television or social media.

Riding is about freedom, and when we can’t – or won’t – exercise that right, we lose some more of it simply by realizing it.

Okay, for a lot of you, the title might not be as real as it was three weeks ago, but down here, we’re a little slower to change to Autumn.  In fact, as of this writing, the first drops into the thirties at night are predicted this weekend.

In short?

It’s a wonderful time to get on the bike.

Now, where I live and ride, in the Deep South, football – especially college football, borders on religion.  The University of Georgia, Alabama, and dozens of smaller colleges have incredible turnouts in attendance every Saturday, and even if you don’t have a ticket?

The tailgating starts at 7 or 8 a.m., even for games that won’t play until 4 p.m.  With that in mind, and an invitation from an old friend to join him for the Georgia game and a cookout at his old fraternity house.

So last Saturday, I loaded up the bike early, noticed a chill in the air (finally) and pointed the old Sportster towards 441 and Athens, Georgia, home of the Bulldogs.  In terms of the ride?  It was far from technical.  No twists, no turns, just the standard highways and byways of the southern United States, but the sun stayed at my back and the traffic was surprisingly light.

Sure, the end of the road held a great dinner, a comfortable chair, and hours of reminiscing, but the ride – what we live for – was one of the great ones where you can almost put it all on autopilot and simply be.

The leaves have only barely begun to change here, and yet, as I pushed north, you could see exactly where “fall” was – and how exciting that was, since I always associate this time of the year with the best riding.  Fewer bugs to clean off, less humidity – at least here – and a lot less traffic in many places.  Hunting season and football season usually trumps riding season down here.

All this made the day a “can’t-miss” and, when I finally pulled up at the AGR house in Athens, Robert greeted me warmly and led me back to some of the finest barbeque I’ve ever had.  He’s always had a knack with people – that I never shared – and he introduced to the current leadership and seemingly dozens of folks I’ll never see again.

Over the afternoon, we talked, tailgated the way you can only do at a big school with a big game, and in general?

Just made more great memories.

Here’s the thing, though:  It didn’t matter how I got there, only that I got there.

In the end, taking the bike on a long fall ride was only a piece of one of the finest days of the year, and now, as so many of us are getting closer to closing down our riding for the year, I want to leave you with one thought – spend more time on that seat!

The SUV, the snowmobile, the sensible four door commuter car?

They’ll all be there for you, but time and weather limit how often we can spend on the bike.

To steal a page from Nike?  Quit “thinking” about it and just do it.

Say what you want, but we’ve all got them – your road name or nickname, depending on what part of the country you live in.  I’ve heard plenty of them over the years, and the best ones, as far as I’m concerned, have a great story behind them.

Anybody can buy a bike and choose a name, but there’s no fun in that.

I want to hear why the retired Army staff sergeant’s road name is Bumblebee.

Why the dude on the old Gold Wing’s name is Frankenstein.

Or that big girl on the Sportster is called Amos.

What I’m tired of is Spider.  Wolf.  Tiny.  Red.  Baldie.

Where’s the creativity?  Where’s the fun?

Now, maybe you’re a Wolf, or a Spider, and if you earned that name, then that’s cool.  If you just randomly picked it out, though?  You gotta do better.   On the other hand, what are some of the best ones you’ve heard?

For me, the best nickname I can remember was an old biker I knew back in the mid-1990s named Moo Cow.  We didn’t ride too often, but I’d see him from time to time in the town I was living in at the time, and one day, while we were smoking a lunchtime cigarette, I asked him about his nickname.

He started laughing, and shared the story behind his nickname…

“Well, I’d been ridin’ for a few years after I got back from Korea, and had a little Triumph I’d bought.  Back in them days, parts were easy to find, but the challenge was you had to do most of your own work on bikes.  The stuff that wore out I could get out of Atlanta or Jacksonville, usually.

“Well, one day, I’d noticed the brakes were wearing a bit, so I’d adjusted them and as I was finishin’ up, my old lady come out the house screamin’ about a snake on the back porch.  I pretty much dropped everything an’ headed into the house, and that old rat snake about gave me a fit.  I spent nearly forty-five minutes tryin’ to catch ‘em, and finally, I did.  Took him out past the compost heap to the hedgerow behind my barn and let ‘em go.

“The whole time, Diane screamin’ in ma ear, worried about that damn snake.  I’d tried shushin’ her, tellin’ her it wasn’t poisonous, telling her them snakes ate rodents.

“No dice.

“She was hollerin’ and about to give me a damned aneurysm.”

The old man paused, pulling on the Lucky Strike.

“Ah finally got him sorted out, and set about putting the furniture back on the porch where I’d moved it, and here come my old ridin’ buddy, John, wanderin’ if I wanted to go for a little scoot?

“Well, of course I did, and I told him so.  Just needed him to give me a second, and I’d grab my things and be ready.  Unfortunately, in my haste, I’d forgotten to lock down the adjusters on the Triumph’s brakes.  We made it about three turns down the road, right up there at Route 14, and I had nothing for brakes, right as I was coming up into that big turn by Pole Bridge Creek.

“Long story short, I ended up goin’ off the road right there before the bridge, right in that little bottom.  The downside was, it was plumb full of manure.  Time I got the bike stopped, it and me was covered in cow crap.

“John had seen me struggling, and had turned around and stopped on the side of the road.  He called down to me to see if I was alright, and I’d yelled that I was, ‘cept for being covered in manure.  I asked if he’d ride back to the house and get the Ford so’s we could load the Triumph in it.  He was back in a few minutes, and he’d brought my coveralls for me to change into, but yeah, from then on, my buddies all called me Moo Cow.”

First, let me state the obvious:  I have no idea where in the world you are reading this.

Due to that, I have no idea what the weather looks like there.  Warm, cold, snowy, sunny, whatever.  What I do know is this:  warmer weather is inevitable.  Spring is coming, and its bringing the riding season with it.

All that being said, there’s still been enough good weather to get out the bike and burn up some fuel.  While my friends up North were worried about what a groundhog in Pennsylvania was going to say, I got the chance to run the old Sportster about sixty miles, and ran into a few boys out on their scoots doing that same thing.

It wasn’t too many miles later I stopped for gas and there were two guys about my age fueling up; like all of us, we stopped to talk and shoot the breeze, lie about our bikes and our lives, and the older of the two riders laughed and left me with something fun…

“Them boys up north is frettin’ about that varmit seeing his shadow, but lemme tell you, down here?

He took a long pull of a Coke and looked at his old Road King, “I just worry about what that ‘hawg sees on February 2.”

The three of us all laughed, but it got me thinking:  why aren’t we, as riders, celebrating “GroundHawg Day?”  The season’s getting closer, Bike Weeks are right around the corner, and it’s less than six months to Sturgis.

Oh, yeah, and most of us just filed taxes, so we’ll be getting a refund back soon to spend money our old ladys didn’t know we had.

What a time to be alive!

Now, I know I missed the chance to share this story with you guys on the “real” Groundhog Day, but this weekend?  Go celebrate a little.  Pull the tarp off, turn on the fuel, get the battery charged up, and a least fire up that motor and listen to it.  Think about the first ride, think about the next trip, make a list of where you and your boys are going to go this year.

Yeah, gas prices suck, inflation is killing all of us, and Covid is screwing up everything else, but make some plans for what you’ll do when the snow melts, or the temps rise, or when the grass starts growing again.

None of us know when we’re going to take our last ride, so we might as well keep making plans.
